Every year, multiple jurisdictions participate in what is called a Warrant Roundup (WRU) in Texas. This is essentially when police become involved in rounding up all defendants who have not met their bond conditions. These roundups can be for any kind of infraction, from the lowest misdemeanor to the highest felony.
What Happens during a Warrant Roundup
During the warrant roundup, every outstanding warrant within the participating jurisdictions are carried out by the police. All other measures have been exercised in order to get these defendants to court, and the WRU is the last option. Officers are aggressive in locating these individuals on these outstanding warrants. They are able to carry out an arrest anywhere, including at the defendants’ home or workplace.
There are often hundreds of thousands of warrants that are in the system at any given time. Defendants can avoid these roundups by paying the outstanding fine on their court file or by appearing in court. Appearing in court after a warrant has been issued doesn’t guarantee that further repercussions won’t be taken. However, the courts encourage individuals to come into court and pay their fines as they will not necessarily be arrested.
How to Check if You Have a Warrant in Texas
Each city has a central database updated daily that lists all individuals with outstanding warrants. Though these lists are taken from public court records and attempt to be as accurate as possible, some of the names on the list could have already posted bail. Anyone looking to find out if they have an outstanding warrant should contact their local jurisdiction.
