The Cost of Drunk Driving In America

It’s one of the most irresponsible and dangerous actions someone can take, yet it’s one that many Americans have admitted doing on more than one occasion. Getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle when intoxicated is a serious offense in any region—and Tarrant County is no exception.

Just Don’t Drive

Drunk drivers often look for reasons to excuse their actions. That’s when myths begin to appear. For example, some people believe that taking a shower or drinking coffee will help dilute some of the effects of being drunk. Neither of these concepts is true in practice. In fact, the only solution for getting to a point where you are sober is time.

Nearly 30 people in the U.S. die each day due to drunk driving. Every two minutes a person is injured because of a drunk driver. It’s not a small problem.

Despite these facts, more than half of all drunk drivers who have been arrested continue to operate motor vehicles with a suspended license. And most people who admit to driving drunk do so about 80 times before finally getting caught. The scariest part is that drunk driving is not only dangerous for the driver—drunk drivers put innocent people at risk by thinking it’s okay to be inebriated and get behind the wheel.

Consequences of Drunk Driving

Getting arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offense and one the courts take seriously. Jail time is certainly a possibility, anywhere up to 180 days if you’re arrested within Tarrant County, including Fort Worth, Arlington, or Mansfield. Your license will be suspended and can remain that way for up to one full year.

Further possible punishments include community service hours, fines, or a permanent criminal record. Depending on your blood alcohol level at the time of your arrest, you may be ordered to install some kind of ignition starter that requires you to be sober in order to start your car. Jail is also an option, of course, with the amount of bail depending on the severity of the drunk driving offense.

With PCS Bail Bonds being part of the Fort Worth community for over two decades, we’ve seen our share of impaired driving incidents. We’ve seen so many lives destroyed because of something that is preventable, if people would just take more responsibility and accountability for their actions.

If you are going to be drinking, you should plan accordingly. Use designated drivers or public transport to leave whichever venue you are drinking. Carpooling and taking a taxi are also viable options. Either way, drinking and driving takes lives and should be avoided at all costs.
