Matthew Pearce, an officer with the Fort Worth Police Department, is still in hospital after being shot several times in a shootout. The suspect, 20-year-old Ed McIver Jr., was taken into custody hours after the gun battle and is being held on $2.0 million bail. McIver Jr. is charged with the attempted murder of Officer Pearce, as well as unlawful possession of a firearms and evading police. “It’s just heartbreaking hearing these kind of acts happening right in the middle of this community,” says Paul Schuder, owner of PCS Bail Bonds. “It forces society to face the reality that police officers really are putting themselves in danger every single time they put on their uniforms. The incident happened after a short chase involving McIver Jr. and his father, Ed McIver Sr. The elder man was evading police after jumping bail and an apparent aggravated assault charge; he was killed in the shootout, which his son was also a part of.
“The shooting of a police officer is a capital offense, which is one of the reasons the bond is so high,” Schuder explains. “At age 20, it’s sad to see someone so young as the accused effectively throw their life away.”
